Bujumbura is the former capital of Burundi and currently the most populous city in the country. The city, which has a population of close to 500,000 inhabitants, is located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, and is the largest urban center in Burundi, as well as its administrative, economic and communications center. Among the industrial activities, the production of cement, soap and the textile sector stand out. It is the main port of the country, where almost all exports come from, among which are coffee, cotton, leather and brass. Bujumbura is located at the geographic coordinates 3 °23'S 29 °22'E. Bujumbura went from being a small town to a military post in East Africa in 1889.
After the First World War it became the administrative center of the territory of Rwanda-Urundi, administered by Belgium by mandate of the League of Nations. The name of Bujumbura replaced the previous one, Bujumbura, when Burundi became an independent state in 1962. After independence, Bujumbura has been the scene of frequent fights between the two main ethnic groups of the country, with Hutu militias fighting the Army, dominated for the Tutsi. The center of the city is a colonial town with a large market, the National Stadium, a large mosque and a cathedral. There are several museums. Among the nearby attractions is the Rusizi National Park and a rock in Mugere which is the place where it is believed that David Livingstone and Henry Stanley may have been found in the sources of the southernmost tributary of the Nile.
