Arnoldo Martínez Verdugo was a politician and leader of the Mexican left, member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, former leader of the Mexican Communist Party and the Unified Socialist Party of Mexico. Originally from Sinaloa, he started his activities as a worker from a very young age, first in Sonora and later in Mexico City, where in 1946 he joined the Mexican Communist Party, from which he soon became one of its outstanding leaders. In 1959 he was elected member of the Collective Secretariat that directed it and in 1963 was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, position in which it was ratified successively until 1981.
He was one of the protagonists of the political negotiations that in 1978 led to the first electoral reform of the regime that allowed the PCM to obtain conditional registration, could participate in the Elections of 1979, where he obtained 18 deputies of which he served as Parliamentary Coordinator. In 1981 he led the dissolution of the Mexican Communist Party and its merger with other leftist forces that constituted the Unified Socialist Party of Mexico, which nominated him to the presidency in the 1982 Elections. In 1985 he was kidnapped and freed after paying a rescue. Later he joined the forces that posited Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano to the Presidency in 1988 and then to the nascent Democratic Revolution Party. He was a federal deputy in the LI legislature 1979 - 1982, in the LIII legislature and in the LVI legislature. In the management of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas as head of the Federal District Government, he served as a delegate in Coyoacán.
He was historian and editor, in parallel to his political activity, and motivated by the interest of preserving the history of the left in Mexico, Martínez Verdugo founded in 1982 the Center for Studies of the Workers and Socialist Movement and directed the magazines New Epoch, Opposition Weekly, Memory and promoted the creation of: History and society, Socialism, and El Machete, among others. He is the author of the books The PCM: Trajectory and Perspectives, The Communist Party and political reform, political crisis and communist alternative and was co-author and coordinator of History of Communism in Mexico. He was a columnist for the newspaper El Universal. He passed away in Mexico City on May 24,2013 at the age of 88.
