Sinaloa de Leyva is the capital of the municipality of Sinaloa, in the Mexican state of Sinaloa on the banks of the Sinaloa River, also called Petatlán. The old name of this town was Villa de San Felipe and Santiago de Sinaloa, then it was changed by official provision to Sinaloa de Leyva in honor of Gabriel Leyva Solano, protomartyr of the Mexican Revolution, father of Gabriel Leyva Velázquez, governor of the state. The Villa was founded on April 30,1583 with the name of Villa de San Phelipe and Santiago de Sinaloa, by Don Pedro de Montoya, in 1585 the second foundation of the town was given, by Antonio Ruiz, Juan Martinez del Castillo, Bartolomé de Montoya, Tomás de Soberanes and Juan Caballero.
In 1591, the Jesuit missionaries Gonzalo de Tapia and Martín Pérez arrived. In 1635, the Jesuits built the first church in the village. The Jesuit school, which was a regional religious and cultural center, was built. It was in Sinaloa de Leyva that the first anti-re-election club was installed in Mexico and where the so-called first martyr of the Mexican revolution was killed on June 13,1910, Gabriel Leyva Solano. Sinaloa de Leyva is located 42 kilometers east of Guasave and has an interesting colonial architectural heritage. Through its cobbled streets you can admire 19th century buildings, which exhibit a variety of styles ranging from neoclassical to the eclecticism typical of the region during the Porfiriato.
