The name Piedecuesta is the result of the abbreviation given to the site, parish and village of "Pie de la Cuesta" at the beginning of the 19th century by the central government of the Republic of Colombia through its laws, decrees and official communications to be located in its urban case, one of the most important tobacco factories in the State. After being used for a few years the abbreviation "Piecuesta", with the political-administrative reform of 1825 it was recognized as Villa de Piedecuesta.
The Spanish settlers of Girón and Pamplona gave the name of "Pie de la Cuesta" to the site located between the rivers of Hato, Frío del Oro and Manco, when they were used to spend the night and supply the beasts of burden before continuing the travelers, muleteers and merchants its painful and risky transit to Pamplona and the Colombian-Venezuelan Andes through the slope that allowed the ascent to the moor of Juan Rodriguez following the northern bank of the upper basin of the Gold River, as well as to ascend through the steep and a slippery royal road that led to Socorro, and from there to Santafé de Bogotá, through the Mesa de Géridas and the eastern Neogranadian Andes. Emblematic sites of these places of lodging were in the XVII and XVIII centuries the corridors of the hacienda of the heirs of the co-founder of Pamplona Ortún Velasco next to the river Lato and the corridors of the haciendas La Venta, Los Cauchos and Tres Esquinas, especially during the civil wars of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
