The municipality of Acatepec is located in the Montaña region in the east of Chilpancingo. As for its municipalities and states with which it limits, in the north it borders Chilapa de Álvarez, Zapotitlán Tablas and Atlixtac, to the south with Ayutla and San Luis Acatlán, to the east with Zapotitlán Tablas and Tlacoapa, and to the west with Ayutla and Quechultenango. The municipal seat, which has the same name, is located 150 km from the state capital. The territorial surface that Acatepec has is 599 km2, which is equivalent to 2.02% of the territory of the state of Guerrero. The name Acatepec comes from the words in Nahuatl Acatl 'carrizo' and tepetl 'hill', so its meaning in Spanish is 'Cerro del reed'.
The community of Acatepec is the oldest in the region, was founded by the yopes, also known as, Tlapanec in 1285. According to the codices of Azoyú I and II, in 1299 a confederation of Tlapanec tribes was constituted which were divided by all the region, occupying different territories and founding kingdoms that today are municipalities, reaching an area that exceeded 10 000 km2. The municipality of Acatepec was finally constituted after following a social struggle. As of May 2, 1957, Acatepec was recognized as an agrarian capital, so it was left with an area of 74,216 hectares, which was beneficial for a total of 2,203 comuneros. Acatepec became a municipal seat on March 23, 1993, in accordance with the decree of the Official Gazette of the Government of the State of Guerrero.
During most of the year the prevailing climate is subhumid, semi-warm and warm. The soil, due to its characteristics, is very good for agriculture and livestock. The percentage of illiteracy among adults in the population is 12.35%, being higher in women than in men. In 2010, the average level of schooling of the population aged 15 years or older was 5.1 years. Also, in that same year 92.2% of the entire population was living in conditions of poverty, with 24.4% in moderate poverty and the remaining 67.8% in extreme poverty.
