More information about Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc

Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc is a locality and head of the homonymous municipality, pertaining to the State of Guerrero, is the most populated locality of the municipality. In 2010 it had 2502 inhabitants. The name some sources affirm that the true name of the zone is Zompancuahuithli, and the name was changed to Ixcateopan after the arrival of the body of Cuauhtémoc and means. The glyph in the Mendoncino Codex for Ixcateopan reflects the two interpretations, a cotton flower, a representation of Cuauhtémoc and a pyramid. "De Cuauhtémoc" was added to the name of Ixcateopan by the Congress of the State of Guerrero in 1950. History of the Heraldry and Genealogy.

As a very curious fact in regard to the heraldic matter, we think it interesting to reproduce the only lineage, authentically native: The Mexican lineage of the Chimalpopoca, which holds the family's own coat of arms. It is necessary to warn that these arms, were not granted by the Spanish kings who, in spite of granting mercedes to the family that we are going to study, none gave them coat of arms. However, in the eighteenth century, the lineage of the Chimalpopoca began to use a symbolic blazon that they always put in their writings and documents. We must also clarify that those of this lineage were, compared to the Hijosdalgo de Castilla and enjoyed countless privileges and exemptions by the Spanish monarchs. All part of the person of the last Aztec Emperor, Cuauhtémoc, the monarch who, by its value, contrasts with the fortitude of his uncle, the also Emperor, Moctezuma.

The life of this man, which the Mexican people have for his national hero, was cut, it is said, by order of Hernán Cortés, an inexplicable act because the Aztec monarch had already surrendered because he could no longer prolong his resistance and was a prisoner of the Spaniards It is not our desire to delve into this event, but we also do not want to burden the Spanish conqueror with a fault that, perhaps, he did not have, since it could happen that the execution of the Aztec caudillo was something of one of his own captains , without knowledge of Cortés, to win the favor of the "gods" conquerors. What it is impossible to deny in a categorical way, is that it was by his order, apparently, the torment to which Cuauhtémoc was subjected, that is to say the so-called "test of fire". In the biographies on Cortes, it is made clear that this fact was lamented by the conqueror himself: it was because the Aztec Emperor had thrown all the treasures into the water, before allowing them to fall into the hands of the Spaniards, the soldiers, avid of gold, they demanded that Cortes give him torment to force him to reveal the place where he had thrown the treasure. Cortés refused and then the soldiers accused him of having agreed, with the defeated Emperor, to seize everything.

Hernán Cortés, thus obliged, had to yield. Anyway, this is a regrettable event that somewhat tarnishes the behavior of the great conqueror of Mexico. But as the story that interests us is another, let's leave this unfortunate episode aside. According to the tradition that is preserved in the Chimalpopoca family, Cuauhtémoc had a natural son of the princess of Ixtapalapa, and that is where all the branches come from, with different variants that spread throughout Mexico. According to this version, Cuauhtémoc, in the days of the Spanish conquest, fell in love with Citlali, daughter of the cacique of Ixtapalapa, having love with her, from whose fruit, the aforementioned princess gave birth on August 13, 1521, date of the Tenochtitlán takeover.

The boy, thanks to the confusion and confusion of those moments, could be put out of danger by his grandfather Xolotl, who took him to the town of Ichcateopán, where he took care of his education. The boy grew up with the name of Juan Cuauhtémoc Chimalpopoca. When the country was pacified, the boy returned to Mexico under the protection of Fray Pedro de Gante who proceeded to baptize him instructing him in Christian doctrine and thus grew. Later, Juan Cuauhtémoc Chimalpopoca, returns to Ichcateopán, where he married Doña Eleonora de Guzmán and Mendoza, having a son who was given the name of José Omatzizitlain Chimalpopoca, who in turn married Antonia Tetzilaixtac, born of both José Antonio Amoxtli Chimal Popoca, who was the trunk of the family that was branching throughout Mexico.

In all this history there are, naturally, gaps produced, for the most part, by the destruction of archives of the area where it was settled, but there are still documents that testify the veracity of the exposed. That this is demonstrated by the fact that over the centuries has been recognizing the nobility of this lineage, giving them always the treatment of "caciques", according to a large number of documents.
