More information about Portmarnock

Portmarnock is a town north of the city of Dublin in Fingal County, Ireland. It rests on the coast and, due to its proximity to the city of Dublin, is a town located 15 km north-northeast of the city center. The village is located between Malahide, Sutton and Baldoyle along the commuter rail line north of Dublin. The Portmarnock station is also on the DART network. The name of the town derives from the Irish word port - meaning port - and Saint Marnoch or Mernoc, also remembered in the name of Kilmarnock in Scotland. It is said that he came to what is today Portmarnock in the fifth century AD. C. The area had been populated hundreds of years before, in the Neolithic.

Remains of activity in the Portmarnock area of those times are still preserved, with tools of artefacts, having been excavated on the north shore of Portmarnock, while the remains of a circular fort are visible from the air south of the town. The son of Queen Maedhbh of Cannaught - Maine - is said to have also been buried in the village. The beach of Portmarnock is becoming very popular with surfers. Like many of the coastal towns of Dublin, it is home to a Martello Napoleonic Tower. Portmarnock is famous for its world-class golf course formally opened on December 26 in 1984, while another course, opened in the nineties, was designed by the German golfer Bernhard Langer. That golf course and the hotel are built around the old house of the Jameson distillery family. Anne Jameson's son was Guglielmo Marconi. Guglielmo, of course, invented and carried out the first transatlantic transmission in wireless morse code in 1902 from Nova Scotia, Canada, to England.

Portmarnock beach was the starting point for two aviation bases. On June 23,1930, the Australian aviator Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew took off the Southern Cross on the first transatlantic flight. The first transatlantic flight to the West alone also started from the beach of Portmarnock on August 18,1932: Jim Mollison, a British pilot, took a de Havilland Puss Moth from Portmarnock to Pennfield, New Brunswick, also in Canada. Today, Portmarnock has two Catholic churches. Two elementary schools, St. Marnock's and St. Helen's, as well as a high school, Portmarnock Community School. There are also several active sports clubs, such as the Portmarnock Tennis Club, Portmarnock F. C. And Naomh Mearnóg GAA.

The Portmarnock Community School was recently ranked as the best public school in the country based on the average results of the Leaving Certificate and provides the needs of 1,400 pupils attending the school from Portmarnock and other nearby towns. According to the 2002 census, the population of Portmarnock is 8,376 inhabitants, although more recently it has increased thanks to many developments of new departments in the area.
