Punakha is the administrative center of the Punakha District, in Bhutan. The dzong, a monastic fortress dating from the 17th century, was the capital of the country until 1955, when the capital was moved to Timbu. Unlike Thimphu, Punakha is quite warm in winter and hot in summer. It is located 1200 meters above sea level. The main economic activity in the Punakha Valley is rice farming, which is cultivated on the banks of the two rivers Pho Chu and Mo Chu, at whose confluence the dzong is located. Due to this location, Punakha is vulnerable to flood by floods in rivers.
In the dungeon of Punakha was held under the Buddhist rite the wedding ceremony of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck with Jetsun Pema, on October 13,2011. It is noteworthy that in this town each, approximately 100-110 years, the festival is celebrated more famous of Bhutan, which lasts about 10 days.
