Abasolo is one of the 43 municipalities that constitute the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. It is located in the center west of the state and approximately 119 kilometers east of the city of Ciudad Victoria. It has a territorial extension of 1,960.46 km². According to the II Population and Housing Count of 2005, the municipality has 11,862 inhabitants, of which 5,894 are men and 5,968 are women. It was founded with the name of Villa de Santillana, but in 1828 it adopted its current name in honor of Mariano Abasolo.
