Monterrey County is a county located on the Pacific coast of the state of California, its northwest part forms the southern half of the Monterey Bay. The northern half of the bay is in the county of Santa Cruz. According to the census of the year 2000, the population was 401,762 inhabitants. The county seat is Salinas. Monterrey County is one of the members of the regional government agency,"Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments." The city of Monterrey was the capital of California under Spanish and Mexican administration. The economy was based mainly on tourism in the coastal regions, and agriculture in the Salinas Valley.
Most of the people of the county live near the coast and the Salinas Valley, while the southern coast and the interior regions of the mountain are almost devoid of human population.
