Amherst County
Amherst County is a county in the US state of Virginia. In the 2000 census the county had a population of 31,894 inhabitants. It is part of the Lynchburg metropolitan area. The county seat is Amherst. The county was formed in 1761 from a portion of Albemarle County. It was named in honor of Jeffrey Amherst, a British military officer.
