Clay County is a county in the US state of Missouri. In the 2000 census the county had a population of 184,006 inhabitants. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The county seat is Liberty, the county was founded on January 2,1822 and was named in honor of Henry Clay, a Kentucky congressman and the 9th Secretary of State of the United States.
