Aragua

Aragua is one of the twenty-three states that, together with the Capital District and the Federal Dependencies, form the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Its capital is Maracay. It is located in the center-north of the country, in the Central region of the country. With 2,505,937 habs. In 2018, according to INE projections, it is the fifth most populous state -behind Zulia, Miranda, Carabobo and Lara-, with 7014 km², the fourth least extensive- ahead of Carabobo, Vargas and Nueva Esparta, the least extensive- and with 235.6 inhabitants / km², the fifth most densely populated, behind Carabobo, Nueva Esparta, Miranda and Vargas. It has 18 autonomous municipalities and 50 civil parishes.

Its main cities are: Maracay, Turmero, La Victoria, Villa de Cura, Santa Rita, Cagua and El Limón. The name of the state comes from an indigenous word of cumanagoto origin with what is called chaguaramo, a type of palm of the region. However, according to Carlos Blanco Galeno, chronicler of Turmero, derives from the caribe aregua, and this one from are and gua which in turn derives from ogun, for what would mean 'my place, my country'.
