Zulia

Zulia is one of the twenty-three states of Venezuela. Its capital is Maracaibo. It is located in the northwest corner and borders the Caribbean Sea to the north, Falcón, Lara and Trujillo to the east, Mérida to the southeast, Táchira to the south and the Guajira Peninsula to the mountains of Perijá and Colombia to the west. With 63 100 km² it is the fifth most extensive State and with 5 125 579 inhabitants in 2017, the most populated. Its main cities are Maracaibo, San Francisco, Cabimas, Ciudad Ojeda, Santa Bárbara del Zulia, Machiques, La Concepción and Los Puertos de Altagracia. The name of Venezuela also comes from the area of ​​Lake Maracaibo. The Spanish conquistadors who came to the site 500 years ago found the Indians living on stilts along the shores of the lake, for which they called this territory Little Venice or Venezuela.
