Its territory surrounds Lake Maracaibo, which is the largest body of water in Latin America. Its main cities are Maracaibo, San Francisco, Cabimas, Ciudad Ojeda, Santa Bárbara del Zulia, Machiques, La Concepción and Los Puertos de Altagracia. The name of Venezuela also comes from the area of Lake Maracaibo. The Spanish conquistadors who came to the site 500 years ago found the Indians living on stilts along the shores of the lake, for which they called this territory Little Venice or Venezuela.
