Santiago is one of the 32 provinces of the Dominican Republic and is an important agricultural center of the country. It is located in the north, specifically in the center of the Cibao Valley at the eastern end of the subdivision called the Northwest Line. Its capital is the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. Santiago is an intellectual, educational and cultural center. It is also an important industrial center with rum, textiles, cigarettes and the tobacco industry. Shoe factories, leather goods and furniture are an important part of the economic life of the province. Santiago also has four important free zones, as well as an important cement factory. It borders with prosperous neighboring cities.
Santiago is part of the Cibao region, considered the richest in the Dominican Republic, per capita. It is surrounded by high mountains that for years have protected it against hurricanes and allows its dense tropical forests to develop hillsides in the mountains, which are among the highest in the region.
