Flores is one of the nineteen departments that make up the Eastern Republic of Uruguay. Its capital is Trinidad. It is located in the southwest of the country, bounded on the north by the Negro River that separates it from the department of Río Negro, on the east by Durazno and Florida, on the south by San José, on the southwest by Colonia and on the west by Soriano. With 5144 km² it is the fifth least extensive department-ahead of San José, Maldonado, Canelones and Montevideo, the least extensive-with 25,050 inhabitants. In 2011, the least populated and with 4.87 hab / km², the least densely populated.
The denomination of Flowers is in tribute to the Brigadier Venancio Flores, who had an outstanding military and political performance in the decades of 1840,1850 and 1860 and who was a native of it.
