The state of Abia is one of the 36 states that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria, located in the southeast of the country. Its capital is Umuahia, although the main commercial center is located in Aba, a former British trading post. The state was created in 1991 with part of the territory of the state of Imo. Its inhabitants belong mainly to the Igbo ethnic group. Abia is one of the nine states belonging to the Niger Delta region. There are seventeen areas of local government.
