Maryland County is the southern and eastern county of the 15 that form Liberia and borders the Ivory Coast. It receives its name from the state of Maryland in the United States. It was founded as an African republic in 1827 but did not obtain independence until 1854. In 1857, what was then the Republic of Maryland joined Liberia and became a county. The county encompasses ones. Km², the capital is Harper. In 2008, the estimated population of the county was 135,938. Due to the years of civil war in the country, only Harper, Buah, and Pleebo are recognized as provinces. Others also include the Sasstown Territory.
