Jawzjān is one of the 32 provinces of Afghanistan. It is located in the north of the country. Its surface is 11,798 km². Its population is 775,794 inhabitants. Its capital is Šibarġan. Some important cities are: Āqčah, Qarqīn and Sang-e Čārak. On May 28,2007, a clash between protesters and police in Šibarġan resulted in the death of six protesters, damage to government buildings and injuries to around 30 protesters and police. The fatal protest was part of a clash of power between the powerful northern military and political Rashid Dostum and other politicians in the province, particularly Governor Joma Khan Hamdard and MP Ahmad Khan, who has just survived an assassination attempt a few days before.
